Last week, I received an email from one of my jewelry making students with the following question:

"Where can I buy nice gem stones and pearls?"

I wish my answer to her question could be to point her to a website and say, "Here's the best place." Unfortunately, in my experience you just can't rely on website pictures to give you exactly what you want.

If you're not that particular about what you are looking for then there are a host of websites you can purchase from.But if you are demanding about what you want, then I think you have to see it, touch it, and feel it before you can decide if it's right for you. Unfortunately, the internet just hasn't advanced to the point yet where it can do that for you. At least, not yet!

What I do is go to bead shows where vendors have on display thousands and thousands of all different types of beads, pearls, gems, and anything and everything else that has to do with jewelry making.

If you can get to one of these shows, even if it is a little out of the way for you, I highly recommend it and think you will find it worth your time.If you find a vendor whose products you really like, you can develop

a relationship with them and continue to purchase from them directly.

But one thing to be careful about. Just as I explained in a previous article about using eBay, before you go to the show be sure that you do some online research about general price levels of the materials you are looking for.Just because it's a show does not necessarily mean that you will find the best prices there. So make sure you know what's a good price and what isn't before you go.

As handcrafted jewelry has become very popular, there are more and more bead shows popping up all the time.However, if you want to attend one of the larger shows I recommend you check the Lapidary Journal's website for the locations and dates of the major shows.
